While other kids were already learning to play the piano, MRZ was busy failing to comprehend how this organized air vibrations could possibly convey emotion.
When MRZ arrived at his first techno party at age 15 in the ’90s at Zurich’s Rote Fabrik, the world stopped making sense: How is it possible for machines to make people dance ecstatically for hours on end? Back then, despite the twisted fascinating sounds of electronics, he’d still spent years noodling pentatonic scales on an electric guitar - until he finally took the plunge and started producing that weird electronic music himself, using computers and related gears. He tinkered also with gadgets like radios, buttons, and joysticks, reprogramming them into music machines. Soon, he was performing live sets, A/V installations, and performances everywhere from squats and off-spaces to sun decks across Europe, China, and the US.
His Liveact is in line with the gear-hacking: Unexpected gritty yet swinging sounds are oscillating somewhere between leftfield- and minimal house twisting and turning against convention while spreading positivity and lightness.
